has always been a dream of mine *shout out to Alec and Angela*. I remember always buying frozen, pre-made pizzas and thinking, I should just cook my own pizza, how hard could it be? So when in Rome, I mean Ukraine, I thought it would be the best time to check that off my bucket list, and maybe even make a habit out of it. I went to the bazaar, a street market that sells fresh food, and bartered for all the ingredients I needed, in Russian. I was so exhausted from the bazaar, I waited on cooking the pizza and made something easier for dinner. But the next day, I made plans to help with English Club in Lugansk and spent the weekend with Amy, a fellow Peace Corps volunteer. So, Monday came around and I was finally ready to cook my pizza! First, I baked the dough, trying to make it similar to a thin crust. Then, I prepared the eggplant, tomatoes, onion, sauce, and cheese, which took forever! Finally, I tried out my oven for the first time. Hours went by and as I stood sweating in front of my ghetto oven and checking how it was cooking because it doesn't tell me its temperature, I felt like a proud parent when my baby came out looking amazing! I cut myself a piece, took a bite and... eh. I realized I bought the wrong cheese, forgot to add sugar, and made the dough too thin BUT I was still proud of myself. Unfortunately, that night (and this morning) I got very sick, undoubtedly from my pizza because it was the only thing I ate all day. Even though I probably waited too long to make it and maybe some of the ingredients went bad, I learned not to make the same mistakes for next time. I'll get better at this whole cooking-from-scratch thing or die trying ;) kidding! While in Lugansk however, I DID find gummy bears ($$$$ = special treat kind of purchase) who happen to be calling my name right now... they tell me everything will be ok, right before I chew their little heads off hehe.
Also, still cleaning the apartment. Pictures soon though!

Another great post! Love it! So proud of you bartering in Russian!
But try to stop getting sick over there - your poor mother is probably so worried!
Love, Lauren
Awww this made me laugh. You're definitely going to be a pizza-making PRO by the time you come home!
...and omg YAY for finding gummy bears! I'll try to sneak some in your next care package :)
You made pizza!! YAY! I remember trying to barter for a bunch of ingredients my second week in Mexico and you're right, it's SO exhausting. No labels + language barrier = most arduous shopping trip eveeeer.
