Religion

The majority of Ukrainians are Ukrainian Orthodox Christian, so I thought I'd do my research on its history before I stick my foot in my mouth. Usually, a dominant religion intertwines itself not just in government but plays a valuable role in community. During Ukraine's Communism reign, some Orthodox churches were allowed to operate with Soviet supervision even though all other religious institutions were banned. Their reasons may have been to not create hostile relationships or that these churches also had educational value in Ukrainian history, art, and architecture. Their cathedrals are breath taking! Either way, Orthodox values and its history have a deep root in most Ukrainian families. In third world parts of Ukraine, religion may play an even greater role as it can inspire us to remain optimistic and encourage us to stay strong. Ukraine, now free from Soviet rule in 1991, has had a surge of new, western religions fighting to convert Orthodox believers such as Greek Catholicism, Roman Catholicism, and Protestant. I believe the structure and values of Orthodoxy are more strict than its competitors, (e.g.: no modifications/no supreme authority from the Pope) which may hurt its religious dominance in Ukraine. On a social level, having religious options may mean a more diverse culture or a hierarchical community based on your status in the church you attend, who knows! As a cultural psychology major, I'm excited to see the dynamics of religion and how it bleeds into social aspects. Even though I'm Agnostic, I plan to attend my host family's church as a way of understanding their way of life, integrating into society, making friends, and becoming active in social gatherings. I probably will be judged for my own beliefs, but hopefully with time I can become family!

Leaving less than two months away, I think I'm getting over my frantic packing stage and into my excited stage. I'm still sad I'm leaving my friends and family but it's that same feeling I had when I left for college. Even though I'm leaving, it'll be a great adventure where I'll learn a lot and connect with different people, and not to worry because I'm coming back!

I am stalking your blog now that I have found it, haha. I was talking about the church thing with someone and I have decided I will go to church if invited and to experience a differing religious culture from our own (plus I am way fascinated by the influence of religion on people). I am right there with you on the "will probably judged for my beliefs" train and don't quite know how I will go about explaining my Atheism... Yay Ukrainian adventures :)
